As we enter into the process of formation for the reception of the Roman Missal, we also embark upon a journey of liturgical and spiritual renewal, a time to engage our hearts and minds more deeply on the mystery of Christ in the celebration of the Eucharist.

New Roman Missal update: Please see the attached "Why Was the Roman Missal Revised" for general information on the Third Edition of the Roman Missal. It briefly summarizes what the Roman Missal is, its history, the changes to expect and the reasons for the new Missal.

New Roman Missal - The Two Changes to Expect There are two reasons changes are being made to our celebration of the Mass this November. Pope John Paul II during the Jubilee Year of 2000 promulgated the third edition of the Roman Missal to enhance the celebration of the Eucharist for the entire Catholic Church. This new edition contains additional prayers for the observances of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, and some updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. The second reason uniquely affects English speaking Catholics and will be much more noticeable. The 2001 guidelines for translation of the Roman Liturgy call for a more literal translation (already used by other languages including Spanish) which differs significantly from the general translation currently used in English speaking countries. These changes will modify our existing prayers during Mass, responses and acclamations. For a preview of the changes for the congregation please see www.usccb.org/romanmissal (click "sample text" then "people's parts").
Update New Roman Missal - 10 Questions - The Committee on Divine Worship and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have addressed ten questions in this week's new Roman Missal educational blurb of the bulletin. If you missed the insert today you can find it online at http://www.usccb.org/romanmissal/Ten_Questions_on_the_Roman_Missal.pdf.
New Roman Missal Update - Benefits of New Translation - By now you should have heard that one of the reasons for the upcoming changes in our Roman Missal is caused by a direction to use more literal translation instead of our current generalized translation. By embracing this richer language the church offers much more to her congregation. At the end of November listen for rich metaphors, rediscover biblical allusions not currently included in our prayers of Mass, and seize the opportunity for greater understanding of our Mass and what it means to be Catholic. There are still bright yellow handouts in the back of church on "Ten Questions about the New Roman Missal," so go grab one or jump online to www.stbenignus.org to see one.
People’s Parts Most Affected - With 3 months left until the use of the new roman missal, if you haven't taken the time yet to preview the changes coming to the congregational participation in the Mass this would be a good week to take a peek. The people's prayer and response changes most noticeable will be found in the penitential acts, Gloria, Nicene creed, preface dialog, holy holy, memorial acclamations, the response right before receiving the Eucharist, and "with your Spirit." There are many more changes being made to the part of the priest. See our parish website www.stbenignus.org to preview the changes of wording in the congregation's responses.
Tracing the 3 changes of the Roman Missals.
In 1969, the First Edition of the Roman Missal in English was published. To meet
the demand by clergy and the laity to celebrate a vernacular liturgy as soon as
possible, this translation of the Latin text into English was expedited. In so
doing, the English liturgy was introduced with inadequacies. Additionally, some
presiders abused the newly approved Mass by deviating from it.
In 1975, the Second Edition of the Roman Missal in English was issued. It addressed abuses and clarified practices of the first edition. For example, unapproved Eucharistic Prayers and the invitation to the congregation to recite parts of the Eucharistic Prayer with the priest were ceased, priests and lectors were stopped from changing the wording of the official texts, and presiders were directed back to the rubrics.
In this Third Edition more than 15% of the texts are new to accommodate the large number of saints canonized by and to address special circumstances (such as wedding anniversaries and funerals). This English translation is significantly closer to the original Latin text - our current superficial contemporary expressions and paraphrasing are being replaced with language that more faithfully recaptures the poetry, richness, solemnity, and sacredness of the Latin text.
New Roman Missal Update: Although the new Roman Missal will not be used until November, the United States Bishops have approved use of the new service music starting in September. Your choir has been practicing and is prepared to start introducing our new service music as allowed in just two weeks! You may have heard it playing before Mass and soon you will have the opportunity to join in. The choir would like to invite you to Tuesday night practice at 6:30 to join in singing this "Mass of Renewal." You are also invited to sing this new Mass setting 15 minutes before Mass over the next few weeks with the choir. There will also be links posted on the church webpage through November so you can listen to the "Mass of Renewal" online.

New Roman Missal Update - Get the new app! If you've taken the time to visit the "Are you ready for the New Roman Missal" link at www.stbenignus.org you know there are many resources to help Catholics embrace the changes coming in November. But did you know there is an iPhone/iPad/iPod app? iTunes offers "The New Mass" app that compares our current congregation responses to the new ones that we will use in November. If you missed getting the brightly colored insert two weeks ago on the same topic you can now get an iPhone app, visit the parish website, or find the new copies in the back of church! Thanks also for the feedback on the new service music - as mentioned earlier, our bishops have agreed to allow earlier introduction of the new translations in the service music before the official implementation date.
New Roman Missal Update: Well parishoners, it's here! Our diocese has given us permission to start the new Mass (in essence just a new translation closer to the original Latin) before Advent. No more waiting! Sorry there have been no recent updates since the summer, but the regular bulletin blurbs will be returning now. If you missed the bulletin blurbs over the summer you can find them at our parish website www.stbenignus.org. You will find the mass cards in the pews this week to help with the congregational responses as well as the yellow and red handouts about the new Roman Missal near the weekly bulletins.
New Roman Missal - Gloria part 4: As we enter back into Ordinary Time, your NRM updates continue! Remember if you've missed any, you can find them on our parish website. The title "Only Begotton Son" that is included in our new Gloria emphasizes that Jesus is a full partner of the Trinity even though as the Son of God, he came forth from the Father. A long explaination for a two word translation. You'll also notice we repeat "you take away the sins of the world" twice. Ah, this allows us to make a threefold petition similar to the Kyrie and Lamb of God.
